Wang Qiyao (played by Sammi Cheng) visits a film set with her classmate Jiang Lili (played by Su Yan) and meets photographer Mr. Cheng (played by Tony Leung Ka-fai). Mr. Cheng takes photos of Qiyao and falls for her, later recommending her for the "Miss Shanghai" pageant. Wang Qiyao's charm not only earns her third place but also captures the unwavering love of Director Li (played by Hu Jun), who holds significant military and political power. Wang Qiyao wholeheartedly invests in this relationship; however, after Director Li is pursued and goes into hiding, she suffers deeply. During this time, her best friend Jiang Lili leaves Shanghai. The arrival of wealthy young man Kang Mingxun (played by Daniel Wu) stirs Qiyao's life, and she becomes pregnant with his child.
