This film is an autobiographical work by director Andrei Tarkovsky. In his childhood, Tarkovsky accompanied his mother (played by Margarita Terekhova) to borrow money from relatives. He discovers a mirror alone in a strange room and examines himself through it. Set to the music of Bach, Tarkovsky's memories gradually unveil a series of events: a stuttering young man on television who heals himself through hypnosis; a neglected wife meeting a lost rural doctor, leading to an ambiguous relationship; a narrator who remains unseen arguing with his ex-wife; a precocious young man receiving reprimands from a military instructor. These seemingly unrelated fragmented memories are connected through the mirror, showcasing the director's philosophical reflections on imagery related to time, history, life, land, and dreams. In the film, the director's mother plays the role of the artist's mother; his father, a renowned Russian poet, is heard reciting his own poetry in the voice-over.
