The film tells the harrowing tale of a woman named Róża during 1945. The story unfolds on a farm in the Masurian Lake District of Poland. Her husband, a German soldier, was killed during the September campaign of 1939 when Germany invaded Poland, leaving her isolated and vulnerable to being raped by Russian soldiers when they arrived. The Russians seek revenge, and the Poles pillage her farm. All order has vanished. A soldier named Tadeusz arrives from Warsaw, concealing his true identity, yet offers a helping hand to Róża.
