This is another poignant documentary feature by the mother of the French New Wave, Agnès Varda. Daguerréotypes originally refers to the "daguerreotype" photographic process invented by French painter Louis Daguerre in 1839 (which led to the creation of the world's first portable wooden box camera). Daguerréotypes is the name of the street where Varda lived in Paris. She begins her journey from the "Blue Thistle" grocery store near her home and gradually expands her visual scope to include the shops along the street and the people who work hard within them. A talkative magician performing on the street serves as a thread that connects the entire film in a wondrous way—his ramblings become a delightful commentary on the actions of customers and shopkeepers.
