Feeling powerless in the chaotic state of her life, Adrian (played by Diane Lane) watches her stubborn husband and her rebellious daughter every day, leading her to think that the only solution is to escape. With a heart full of wounds, Adrian arrives in Rodanthe, where her friend runs a small inn. While helping to manage the inn, Adrian hopes to heal her wounded soul with the picturesque beauty of the island. Upon her arrival, Adrian feels that everything is different from her dull past—it's so fresh and beautiful. However, the hurricane forecast casts a shadow over her good mood. A man named Paul (played by Richard Gere) checks into the inn, becoming Adrian's only guest. As the hurricane cuts off their path, a genuine bond gradually develops between the two.
