As the national election approaches, the long-favored dark horse — Congressman Cam Brady (played by Will Ferrell) — accidentally makes a fool of himself in public. Behind the scenes, financial backers scheme to nominate a rival candidate, aiming to create an impact in his territory, North Carolina, and their choice is rookie newcomer Marty Huggins (played by Zach Galifianakis). This somewhat effeminate middle-aged man is the director of the local tourism center and has been living a quiet, stable life. At first, Marty seems to be the least favorable choice, lacking any political experience and making several blunders in public. However, with the support of his new sponsors and financial backing, along with a relentless campaign manager and his family's political connections, he quickly becomes a dark horse candidate that even the charismatic politician Cam can’t underestimate. As election day approaches, the fierce competition between these two remains deadlocked and soon escalates into an irreconcilable conflict. They spare no effort in slandering and undermining each other, using every trick in the book to sabotage one another, vowing to fight to the bitter end. The politically charged atmosphere is set for a great tumult.
