The story takes place a thousand years ago in Echizen Province, where Lady Murasaki (played by Sayuri Yoshinaga) marries a much older husband and gives birth to her daughter, Akiko. Her husband passes away shortly after their marriage, and Murasaki continues to live a life of widowhood while beginning to write the novel "The Tale of Genji." Soon, Fujiwara no Michinaga summons her to Kyoto to serve as a tutor to his daughter, Akiko, hoping to groom her as the most suitable candidate for empress. Murasaki enters the palace, continuing to write "The Tale of Genji" while recounting its stories to Akiko... This is the love story of Hikaru Genji. Genji (played by Yuki Amami) is extraordinarily handsome and lost his mother at a young age. He marries Aoi, the daughter of the Left Minister, but does not love her. Since childhood, Genji has held a secret affection for his father's favored concubine, Fujitsubo, leading to an incestuous relationship. When Fujitsubo becomes pregnant and gives birth, both are filled with guilt. Genji unexpectedly discovers a girl named Murasaki (played by Takako Tokiwa), who resembles Fujitsubo, and takes her into his home, eventually marrying her. Genji also engages in affairs with several noblewomen, including Princess Akashi, Rokujo, and others. The decadence of aristocratic life, the fate of humanity, and the tragedies of women are all narrated by Murasaki.
