The golden-haired mouse spirit who controls the lanterns, during the Buddha's retreat at the Transformation Dragon Pool, seals off the pool, falsely claims to transmit the Buddha’s teachings, and takes on the identity of the Earth Gushing Lady to govern the human world, which is discovered by the victorious Buddha, Sun Wukong. The Earth Gushing Lady impersonates Tang Seng and uses the Buddha’s Demon-Suppressing Pestle to cast Sun Wukong down to the mortal realm. Various immortals fear to defy the Buddha's decree and secretly send their disciples to the human world to save Wukong. Wukong transforms into a mortal named Gui'er and, along with the half-human, half-fox character Zhao Yan, resorts to deception to survive in the jianghu. They arrive at Dongsheng Village, where they meet Ni Xiaojiu, who is mistaken for Wukong's reincarnation, and the fairy Fu Yao. Under Fu Yao's guidance, Gui'er realizes that magical power comes from within oneself rather than from seeking it externally.
