After his mother perished in a fire, young Makoto (voiced by Yamashita Sōma) forms a new family with his father, Miki (voiced by Takuya Kimura), and stepmother, Natsuko (voiced by Yoshino Kimura). Overwhelmed by grief, Makoto becomes gloomy and reclusive, struggling to adapt to his new environment. One day, he accidentally follows a talking heron (voiced by Masaki Suda) into an abandoned, mysterious tower, inadvertently entering a fantastical "spirit world" and embarking on an incredible adventure... The film's title pays homage to the novel of the same name published by Yoshino Genzaburo in 1937, but the story is an original work by Hayao Miyazaki.
