Synopsis: Gao Wenjian is a screenwriter at Jincheng Cultural Investment Company, who also teaches writing to some students in his spare time. In Wenjian’s view, teaching writing somewhat misleads students, as it is not a true literary era at the moment, yet he finds himself at an age where he must earn a living through writing. Despite constantly searching for creative inspiration and having written several scripts, he still faces unending nagging from his wife, Xiaoli. Xiaoli’s brother is Wenjian’s boss, which gives her a natural sense of superiority in front of her husband. This sense of superiority becomes even more pronounced when a couple named Ma Guoxing, who have a regional accent, moves in next door. Ma Guoxing, originally from Henan, has served in the military and worked various jobs; he now supports his family by selling spices and has bought a house in the city. His wife, Dongmei, does not need to work and manages household duties while taking their son, Ma Zhuang, to school. Living door-to-door and meeting frequently, the two families begin to interact. However, during these interactions, Xiaoli constantly flaunts her urban superiority, boasting about everything from home decor and fashion sense to their son Gao Jin’s education and her husband’s profession. Under Xiaoli’s influence, Dongmei’s life also begins to change quietly. Ma Guoxing simply laughs it off, focusing solely on making money for the family. While the Ma family enjoys thriving days together, problems arise between Gao Wenjian and Xiaoli. Initially, Wenjian needs to buy some Korean youth dramas to spark inspiration and pass the time. Then, by chance, he discovers that Xiaoli has been very close to another man. This ignites a primal sense of rage within him, especially on the day Dongmei loses sight of Gao Jin and Ma Zhuang while sending them to school. After the anger subsides, Wenjian moves out of the house that originally belonged to Xiaoli’s brother, and Xiaoli gets hit by a car while rushing to the road after exiting Dongmei’s vehicle. During his time at the hospital caring for Xiaoli, Wenjian suddenly feels inspired to write something based on the Ma family next door, but all that flows from his pen pertains to his own issues.
