Tracy (Allison Janney) and Bill (Ciarán Hinds) have been married for many years and are raising two children together. What troubles Tracy the most is that Bill has a pedophilic disorder, and ultimately, he is imprisoned for this unforgivable vice. Tracy eventually meets a seemingly normal man, Harvey (Michael Lerner). Joy (Shirley Henderson) is Tracy's sister, a girl as pure as an angel. Joy had a failed romance that she has not been able to move on from. Helen (Ally Sheedy) has just ended her marriage; after leaving her husband, she turns to Joy, hoping to live with her. Joy naively agrees to Helen's request, not realizing what it truly means.
