Social worker Emily Jenkins (played by Renée Zellweger) deals with a monotonous and tedious job, interacting with different families daily to address their children's educational issues, receiving far more complaints than thanks. Already overwhelmed by 38 cases, her supervisor assigns her Case No. 39. Feeling the weight of responsibility, a weary Emily drives to the home of young Lily Sullivan (played by Jodelle Ferland). As usual, Emily is met with hostility, and the strange atmosphere of this family only heightens her anxiety. Moved by Lily's loneliness and helplessness, Emily becomes more actively involved in the case. On a cruel night of abuse, she and a colleague successfully rescue the little girl from her parents. Everything seems to have reached a conclusion, yet it also feels like just the beginning…
