The manned spacecraft Ares 3 successfully arrives on Mars, but a devastating storm unexpectedly strikes the astronauts, forcing Ares 3 to abort its mission and return to Earth. During the evacuation, astronaut Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon) is hit by debris blown off the spacecraft. With little hope of survival, his teammates hastily return and announce to the world that he has been killed. Surprisingly, Mark survives against all odds. He takes refuge in the Mars base to recover. The next Mars mission isn't scheduled for four years, while the base's supplies can only last him 31 days. After a brief period of despair, Mark decides to use his limited food supplies to grow crops on this deserted planet, seeking a glimmer of hope. Meanwhile, Earth quickly discovers that Mark has survived and they devise a rescue plan. Can the lone Mark wait for the rescue team to arrive? The film is adapted from Andy Weir's novel of the same name.
