US Air Force pilot Captain Colter Stevens (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) is on a mission in Afghanistan when he suddenly wakes up to find himself on a speeding train, sitting next to a stranger named Christina (played by Michelle Monaghan), who is talking to him. Colter doesn't understand how he ended up on the train and discovers that he is inhabiting another person's identity. Just as he is trying to understand, an explosion occurs on the train... Colter wakes up again, finding himself in a sealed space pod, where a female officer named Goodwin (played by Vera Farmiga) is communicating with him via video, asking him to report on what happened on the train. Confused, Colter is sent back to the train once more. This time, he finally realizes he is on a mission to investigate a train bombing in Chicago to find the terrorist and learn his next target. Colter is sent to the speeding train again and again, each time having only eight minutes to investigate. During the investigation, Colter discovers that he died a week earlier and that he is part of a secret mission called "Source Code," which uses the brain wave imagery of Colter's still-functioning brain cells to reconstruct events and uncover the truth. Ultimately, Colter successfully completes the mission but decides to go back to the train once more to save the innocent lives on board...
