In the desolate American West, a railway is under construction. A politician, Hedley (played by Harvey Korman), foresees a significant rise in land prices due to the railway passing through Rock Ridge and plans to drive out all the town's residents. The residents, fearing an attack, hope that the state government will send them a strong sheriff. However, Hedley manipulates events to have the governor appoint the first Black sheriff in history, Bart (played by Cleavon Little), to defend Rock Ridge. Bart was once a railroad worker sentenced to death for assaulting a foreman, but unexpectedly, just before his execution, his fate completely turns around. Bart, having escaped death, faces not only the disdain of the Rock Ridge residents but also Hedley's thugs. With help from the former gunslinger of the town, Jim (played by Gene Wilder), Bart continuously defeats Hedley's men, yet the real hard fight still lies ahead...
