Norville (played by Tim Robbins) comes to New York to look for a job after graduating from college, and due to his lack of experience, he can only work as a mailroom clerk at a financial company. Soon after, the president commits suicide, and the company's real power falls into the hands of the cunning board member Musburger (played by Paul Newman). This initially has nothing to do with Norville, but Musburger, in order to achieve his goal of acquiring the company at a low price, appoints the seemingly foolish Norville as his puppet president. Meanwhile, Norville is focused on developing his new invention—the hula hoop. Musburger hopes to use this invention to drive the company’s stock down, but surprisingly, the hula hoop becomes wildly popular, and the company's stock soars. In a fit of rage, Musburger begins to sabotage the company behind the scenes, plunging the situation into chaos, and Norville becomes the target of blame, even facing the possibility of being committed to a mental institution. Desperate, he returns to the top floor of the company building, ready to take a leap to end it all, but at that moment, the long-deceased former president unexpectedly appears...
