Maria (played by Chiara Mastroianni) and Richard (played by Benjamin Biolay) got married when they were only twenty years old; however, their feelings for each other were worn down by the long passage of time. One day, Richard discovers that Maria has cheated on him. Although he feels anger and despair, deep down, he still loves Maria. Ultimately, Maria decides to leave this loveless family, but she doesn't go far; instead, she moves into room 212 of the motel across the street, where she can observe Richard through the window. She wants to contemplate some metaphysical questions and find out what is most important in life.
