In a small border town in Mexico, a gunslinger (Clint Eastwood) arrives and learns that two rival gangs, the Rojos and Sheriff Baxter, have been fighting for a long time. He decides to mediate between the two factions to eliminate the town's evil forces and restore peace. He witnesses the Rojos ambushing a group of soldiers and stealing their gold, so he uses the bodies of two soldiers to lure Baxter into finding evidence against the Rojos. At the same time, he informs the Rojos, leading to an intense shootout between the two sides. During the battle, Joe finds the gold and discovers Melisa, a woman kidnapped by the Rojos. He hands Melisa over to Baxter in exchange for his captured son, Antonio. Later, he learns that Melisa was taken by the Rojos' Ramon, so he manages to rescue her and helps her escape the town with her husband and child. Ramon, deeply in love with Melisa, discovers that she has been released and blames the Baxter family. He then embarks on a maniacal quest for revenge. Which gang will prevail, and can the gunslinger, as a mediator, restore peace to the town?
