The male lead, Keaton (played by Buster Keaton), is a rural cinema projectionist who enjoys reading detective novels and often fantasizes about being a great detective like Sherlock Holmes. One day, he lies to his girlfriend, Kathleen (played by Kathryn McGuire), claiming that a chocolate bar worth one dollar is four dollars. However, his rival takes the opportunity to frame him by saying Keaton stole someone else's watch to afford the chocolate. Kathleen believes the slander and kicks Keaton out, breaking off their engagement. After some investigation, Keaton discovers that his rival is actually the one who pawned the watch, but he lacks evidence to clear his name. One day, while projecting a film, Keaton realizes that the story on the screen mirrors his own experience, with similar characters; the only difference is that the movie takes place in an upper-class family. As Keaton becomes engrossed in the film, he walks out of the projection room and into the screen to arrest his rival. However, once inside the screen, Keaton faces obstacles and finds himself at a loss. As the scenes change, the images on the screen continuously shift from fantasy to reality…
