Brad (Will Ferrell) is a radio manager who falls in love with a woman named Sara (Linda Cardellini) and gains two lovely stepsons, Megan (Scarlett Estevez) and Dylan (Owen Vaccaro). Thus, Brad's life gains a new goal— to become the best stepfather in the eyes of the two kids. However, a man's presence makes this goal seem out of reach, that man being Sara's ex-husband and the kids' biological father, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg). This seemingly disheveled man who lounges around all day continuously disrupts Brad's life. Although Dusty appears to be unreliable, his arrival is always warmly welcomed by the children.
