In 1863, the wing king of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, Shi Dakai's troops, were defeated by the Qing army on the banks of the Dadu River, resulting in the tragic death of tens of thousands of Taiping soldiers. Ten years later, General Zhang Chi, a former officer of the wing king, sent Yang Xiaoling carrying a fragrant pouch embroidered with a detailed map of the Taiping army's secret arsenal to contact the Yi leader Shama Muxia in Daliangshan to raise the flag against the Qing. Disguised as a Qing soldier, Yang Xiaoling managed to pass through eleven checkpoints, only to be surrounded by the Qing army.
