Sridevi plays Sashi, an Indian housewife who enjoys making laddus and has become somewhat disconnected from the times by dedicating her life entirely to caring for her family. Not understanding English, Sashi faces ridicule from her husband and daughter, and the diminishing common topics with her family make her feel a sense of crisis. An unexpected opportunity arises when relatives in the United States invite Sashi to help with wedding arrangements. To improve communication with her family and earn their respect and attention, Sashi decides to enroll in an English training class in New York for four weeks to overcome her language barrier. In this training class, Sashi also bids farewell to her previously quiet life, making a variety of friends who encourage each other to improve in pursuit of their common goal of learning English. Through hard work, Sashi goes from having no background in English to shining at the wedding banquet, where her English blessing for the newlyweds not only earns her newfound respect from others but also helps her regain her family’s love and respect... This film was screened as the opening film at the 37th Toronto International Film Festival.
