Michael (Cillian Murphy) is an aimless young man who has no skills and spends all day idling around. He owes a large sum of money to Darren (Brendan Gleeson) and can't repay it. Unfortunately, Darren is the most notorious gang leader in the area. Brenda (Jodie Whittaker) is a friend of Michael's who accidentally kills a small-time thug working for Darren. Coincidentally, Michael's father Jim (Jim Broadbent) happens to be at the murder scene and becomes a witness. The three of them have to go on the run to escape Darren's vengeance. Michael is driven nearly mad by his father's difficult and stubborn personality, Brenda's perpetually sorrowful expression, and the series of troubles and accidents that befall them.
