Dr. Harry Dalton (played by Pierce Brosnan) is a volcanologist at the U.S. Geological Survey, and he has been sent to inspect a small town on Dante's Peak, which is a dormant volcano near Washington. Upon arriving in town, Harry finds that Mayor Rachel (played by Linda Hamilton) is hosting a celebration because the town has just received the award for the second-best place to live in America. Rachel and her two children show Harry around, and as they pass by the hot springs lake, Harry notices that the acidity of the water is too high and discovers two boiled corpses. Realizing the situation is dire and that the volcano is likely to erupt, Harry suggests that Rachel issue a warning. However, his boss Paul, who accompanies him, believes he is overreacting and plans to return home after a week of exploration. The town council also refuses to issue a warning due to various interests. One night, the town's water suddenly becomes contaminated with sulfur, a sign of impending volcanic eruption. Rachel immediately initiates an evacuation plan, but her mother refuses to leave the mountainside. At this moment, the volcano erupts uncontrollably...
