The story is told from a child's perspective, reflecting on his father—barber Song Han-mo (played by Song Kang-ho)—and his life. Han-mo is not well-educated and is nicknamed "Tofu." He makes a living by cutting hair and fell in love with his female apprentice (played by Moon So-ri) when he was young, eventually marrying her. Han-mo's barber shop is located near the Blue House presidential residence, so he witnesses many historical events related to the changing of South Korean presidents. On the day of the "April 19 Revolution," Han-mo's son, named Yeok-an, is born.
By chance, Han-mo meets the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (played by Son Byeong-ho), who recommends him to become the barber for the president (played by Jo Yong-jin). For the next 12 years, Han-mo has the opportunity to serve by the president's side and is fortunate enough to accompany him on a visit to the United States. However, due to an outbreak of the Marcus virus, Han-mo's son is taken away by officials of the secret service, and the severe torture he endures leaves the child disabled in both legs. In an effort to treat his son, Han-mo seeks connections and resources, but faces repeated failures, ultimately setting out alone with his child in search of medical help…
