Selvig (Nicolas Cage) is finally released after serving several years in prison for murder, welcomed back by his love, Lula (Laura Dern). The lovers are reunited, but Lula's mother, Marietta, has always disliked Selvig and is constantly trying to keep her daughter away from him. The two decide to elope and head south. Marietta hires her detective boyfriend Johnny to track them down, intending to bring Lula back. During their elopement, they reveal their dark pasts riddled with blood, violence, and sex, fully understanding each other. Selvig is currently working for a drug dealer named Santos, who fears Johnny will discover their trading location while following Selvig, so he eliminates Johnny. Another drug dealer, Bobby, sets a trap to get rid of Selvig.
