Paul (Michel Piccoli) and Camille (Brigitte Bardot) are a happy couple, and Paul's work as a playwright ensures their financial security. One day, producer Prokosch (Jack Palance) invites the couple to a meeting, during which Camille experiences for the first time a terrible feeling called "contempt" as she listens to her loquacious husband. Over time, this feeling not only does not diminish but grows stronger, to the point where she can no longer love her husband as she once did. At the same time, the handsome Prokosch captures Camille's attention, and they become increasingly close. When the affair is revealed, Paul is enraged, but Camille and Prokosch drive away in a luxury car without a care, unaware that a tragic fate awaits them ahead.
