Prince Hamlet of Denmark (played by Kenneth Branagh) is summoned home to attend his father's funeral and the wedding of his mother and Uncle Claudius. The sudden death of his father, coupled with his mother's remarriage, leaves Hamlet in deep sorrow. One night, Hamlet encounters his father's ghost on the castle ramparts, who reveals that he was poisoned by Claudius. The ghost demands that Hamlet take revenge on the usurper who seized the throne and married the queen. Burdened with the task of revenge, Hamlet decides to feign madness to conceal his true intentions and observe Claudius’s actions. He then stages a play that reenacts the murder of the king. Claudius’s guilt is exposed, but Hamlet mistakenly kills the father of his lover (played by Kate Winslet), which drives her to madness and death. Subsequently, Hamlet's mother also drinks poison and dies, and eventually, Hamlet kills Claudius in anger.
