In a small rural town in Saitama Prefecture, Tanaka Hiroshi (played by Shota Matsuda), with his super exaggerated afro, spends his aimless childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. After unilaterally dropping out of high school, he says goodbye to his close friends Oosawa (Atsushi Tsutsumishita), Okamoto (Kei Tanaka), Inoue (Ryusuke Komakine), and Murata (Kaname Endo), and sets off alone to the metropolis of Tokyo to make a living. Working at a tunnel excavation company, Tanaka toils day after day, unknowingly reaching his 24th birthday. One day, he receives an invitation to Inoue's wedding, which reminds him of the promise he made with his friends: regardless of who marries in the future, the others must bring their girlfriends to attend. As he watches his friends with their ordinary or beautiful girlfriends, flirting and being affectionate, Tanaka feels an urgent sense of anxiety. At this moment, the beautiful and gentle neighbor Kato Aya (played by Nozomi Sasaki) appears before him, igniting a spark of hope for love in the hopeless Tanaka... This film is based on Maria Noritsuke’s popular manga series "Afro Tanaka," specifically the segment "Tokyo-bound Tanaka."
