HBO Documentary Films has acquired the U.S. television rights for the documentary "The Cold Blue," which focuses on the story of the U.S. Eighth Air Force carrying out multiple deadly missions during World War II. It will be screened at the New York Film Festival and is set to air in June next year. The film includes a restored 4K version of the Oscar-winning director William Wyler's documentary "The Memphis Belle," along with new footage. In 1943, he traveled to Europe to document the ongoing air battles and carried out combat missions on the B-17 bombers, during which one of his cameramen was killed. All of this colored original footage was recently discovered in the archives of the National Archives. At its peak, the Eighth Air Force was the most powerful air force in the world. At the height of the war in early 1945, the Eighth Air Force could deploy 2,000 bombers and 1,000 fighters simultaneously, and of the 350,000 airmen who served in World War II, 26,000 made the ultimate sacrifice.
