The film tells the story of 1948, when the residents of Jeju Island heard a terrifying rumor—that everyone beyond 5 kilometers from the coastline would be unconditionally executed as rebels. This order was given by the U.S. military stationed there, supposedly to help defend the security of the Korean Peninsula. The islanders, who did not understand English, lived in constant fear, hiding everywhere and subsisting on shared potatoes. Over 30,000 villagers were completely unaware of why these foreign officers were driving them away, and what fate awaited them.
