Julian (Warner Baxter) is a Broadway theater director who, despite being old, still yearns to direct a perfect play. An elderly millionaire gives Julian a large sum of money to invest in his new show solely because he has long admired the lead actress Dorothy (Bebe Daniels). Unfortunately, Dorothy does not even glance at the millionaire's affections, still hopelessly in love with her former lover. The intense rehearsal period finally comes to an end, and the grand opening night is approaching. However, at this critical moment, Dorothy accidentally injures her knee and is unable to take the stage. In her place is a chorus girl named Peggy (Ruby Keeler), and to everyone's surprise, Peggy's performance achieves unprecedented success.
