In 1914, in a small town in Devon, a boy named Albert (played by Jeremy Irvine) witnesses the birth of a foal named Joey. At the market, it is frequently bid on and eventually acquired by Albert's father, Ted (played by Peter Mullan), for a hefty price of over 30 guineas, which also causes him to offend the landlord due to his limp. Albert and Joey play together joyfully and share moments with friends. However, the good times do not last long, as the landlord visits and claims that if Joey cannot plow the fields, he will take it away immediately. In desperation, Ted wagers all his possessions. Under pressure, Albert saddles Joey and forces him to plow, even using a whip, but cannot make him submit. To repay his debts, Ted personally plows the fields, and through hard work, they reap a harvest, but a heavy rain destroys everything. The Germans advance, and Ted is forced to sell the horse to the cavalry for over 30 guineas. Although it is difficult for Albert to part with Joey, he bids farewell to him with tears in his eyes as Joey heads to an uncertain battlefield. During the war, Joey's owners change constantly, from a British captain to a French farmer and his granddaughter, and then to a German cavalryman; however, what Joey truly waits for is Albert. Will they be reunited...?
