Mary Haines (Meg Ryan) lives in Manhattan, New York, and is a moderately successful fashion designer. She has a handsome and accomplished husband, a sweet and lovely daughter, and the family resides in a luxurious villa, making them the envy of everyone. Surrounding Mary are a group of longtime friends, including independent fashion magazine writer Sylvia Fowler (Annette Bening), a somewhat nagging Eddie Cohen (Debra Messing), and the sexy essayist Alex Fisher (Jada Pinkett Smith).
