Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a promising young man with a fulfilling life, a successful job, and a harmonious family. However, what was once a minor annoyance, his back pain, is diagnosed as a cancer with a 50/50 cure rate. The impact of the illness, the departure of his girlfriend Rachel (Bryce Dallas Howard), and his mother's sadness cause Adam, who initially faced the disease with confidence, to gradually feel depressed and hopeless.
