Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a promising young man with a fulfilling life, a successful job, and a harmonious family. However, what was once a minor annoyance, his back pain, is diagnosed as a cancer with a 50/50 cure rate. The impact of the illness, the departure of his girlfriend Rachel (Bryce Dallas Howard), and his mother's sadness cause Adam, who initially faced the disease with confidence, to gradually feel depressed and hopeless. Only his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) remains steadfastly by his side, supporting him in his unique way. Katherine (Anna Kendrick) is an inexperienced psychologist assigned to help Adam with his emotional struggles. While she appears calm and professional on the surface, her own life and relationships are a mess. Two disheartened individuals meet in this unique environment of illness, and from initial misunderstandings to reconciliation, they gradually realize that perhaps the most important things in the world are right beside them. The film is based on the true experiences of writer Will Reiser, whose friend supporting him at that time was Seth Rogen, who plays Kyle.
