Young Valentin (James McAvoy) applies to become the secretary and assistant of the great literary figure Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer), witnessing the deep and tumultuous emotions between the elderly writer and his wife, Sofia (Helen Mirren). Tolstoy is dissatisfied with Sofia's extravagant lifestyle, while Sofia disapproves of Tolstoy's collaboration with his "radical" disciple, Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti). The two forces continuously clash, and Valentin gets caught in the middle, writing diaries for Sofia and Chertkov, documenting Tolstoy's later years, while also developing feelings for Tolstoy's admirer, Masha (Kerry Condon). Exhausted, Tolstoy ultimately decides to leave home, ending up at the last station, while the struggle between Sofia and Chertkov continues until the final moment...
