The story of "Lear by the Sea" follows the Japanese national treasure actor Chōkichi, who, after reaching an advanced age and being suspected of having dementia, is abandoned by his eldest daughter and disciples. He is forced to write a will and is sent to a nursing home. One day, Chōkichi escapes from the nursing home and wanders alone by the sea, where he encounters his youngest daughter, whom he hasn't seen in a long time. It is as if he sees the shadow of King Lear's most beloved daughter, Cordelia, and realizes that his circumstances are strikingly similar to those of King Lear... The story is based on Shakespeare's tragic play "King Lear," delicately portraying Chōkichi's final brilliance.
