The story takes place in New York in 1994. Like most rebellious youth, Luke (Josh Peck) has reached a breaking point in his relationship with his family and spends his days wandering the streets, making pocket money by dealing marijuana. Like many psychologists, Squires (Ben Kingsley) has his own tangled problems; the only connection between him and Luke is marijuana—Squires provides psychological therapy for Luke, while Luke repays him with cannabis. Both are lost souls, and over time, a strange trust and friendship develops between Luke and Squires. Luke has always had a crush on his classmate Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby), who, despite her cheerful exterior, also has feelings for Luke. What Luke does not expect is that Stephanie's non-biological father is none other than his "regular client" Squires, setting off a chaotic relationship filled with both laughter and tears.
