In 1862, British widow Anna (Deborah Kerr) arrives in Siam (the old name for Thailand) with her son to become the governess for the country's king (Yul Brynner) and his 58 children. Through Anna, the king learns about the essence and connotations of Western modern civilization, while Anna understands that for a king in an Eastern country, maintaining his dignity and respecting the customs of his people is of utmost importance. After successfully hosting a dinner for foreign dignitaries, Anna and the king celebrate by dancing joyfully, but a disagreement arises over the punishment of the new queen for infidelity, illustrating the complexities of their relationship amid cultural conflicts. However, despite their many disagreements, they achieve mutual respect and fall in love with each other.
