1982 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film: Hungarian director István Szabó The film "Mephisto" is based on the true life of the greatest actor in the history of modern German drama, Gustaf Gründgens. It tells the story of an actor who compromises by collaborating with the Germans during World War II, only to be ultimately abandoned by them. The title "Mephisto" originally refers to those who make deals with the devil. The protagonist remains psychologically in a position of humility and cowardice throughout, and although the Germans bestow many honors upon him, it does not change his factual and psychological identity as a Jew, though this is not deeply explored. Finally, at the end of the film, everything erupts, marking the climax of the film.
