The adopted daughter of a wealthy Shanghai family, Bai Liusu (played by Miao Qianren), marries a debauched young man. Not long after the marriage, the couple has a falling out, and Bai Liusu moves back to her parental home after the divorce. Her money, which she brought with her, is gradually exhausted by the declining Bai family over the years, and she is constantly ridiculed by her brother. To escape her increasingly difficult situation, Liusu considers remarrying. At this time, Mrs. Xu, a friend of the Bai family, is trying to set up a match for the seventh daughter, Baolu, whose suitor is Fan Liuyuan (played by Chow Yun-fat), who has just returned from studying in England. Liuyuan, now a businessman, is charming and romantic. On the day of the blind date with Baolu, however, Fan Liuyuan is captivated by Bai Liusu, dancing with her all night and completely ignoring Baolu. The Bai family believes Liusu is sabotaging the engagement, leaving them even more frustrated with her. Liusu and Liuyuan develop mutual affection and quickly fall in love after reuniting in Hong Kong. However, the ever-flirtatious Liuyuan has no plans for marriage, and Liusu is unwilling to go back to Shanghai. Later, Liuyuan keeps calling her to meet in Hong Kong. Unable to resist her longing for Liuyuan, Liusu returns to Hong Kong, and the two begin living together. When the Pacific War breaks out and Hong Kong is occupied, the turmoil traps Liuyuan, who had originally planned to go to England, and they end up getting married in Hong Kong, leading a temporarily simple life. 　The film won the Best Costume Design award at the 25th Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan.
