The story takes place in the early 1950s. Anina (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg) is sent to live with her aunt in the countryside by her family. The monotonous life day after day at her aunt's house makes Anina feel suffocated, and she resorts to stealing items from stores to regain a sense of thrill. Anina's stealing is discovered, forcing her to find a legitimate job, and she becomes a maid for the Gaillon couple. One day, Anina encounters a middle-aged man named Michel (played by Didier Bezace). Although Michel already has a family, Anina pursues him passionately, and it doesn't take long for Michel to fall for her. However, at that time, Anina has already started a new romance with a pickpocket named Raoul (played by Simon de La Brosse), and Anina is also pregnant with his child.
