In the early 17th century, after a long period of warfare and annexation, the Sengoku period in Japan came to an end, giving way to the era of Tokugawa shogunate rule. Peace arrived, but it also brought about the displacement of many samurai, who struggled to make a living. During this time, some ronin requested to commit seppuku in front of the noble houses to preserve their honor; some were retained, while others received material support, but there were also those seeking to extort through this method. One day, the prestigious Ii family welcomed a young ronin named Chichiyama Motome (played by Eita), and to stop this trend, the Ii family staged a cruel act that forced Chichiyama and his disgraceful way to die tragically. Originally believed to deter extortionists, soon after, another middle-aged samurai named Tsugumi Hanshirō (played by Ichikawa Ebizō) came seeking death... This film is adapted from the novel "The Ronin Chronicles" by Takiguchi Yasuhiko, which was previously brought to the screen by the master filmmaker Kobayashi Masaki in 1962.
