Manon (played by Emmanuelle Béart) is a shepherdess wandering in the mountains, hiding a tragic past beneath her gentle and beautiful exterior. Manon's father died due to a conspiracy, and the culprits were Papit (played by Yves Montand) and his nephew, Grégoire (played by Daniel Auteuil). In a chance encounter, Grégoire sees Manon bathing and, unaware of the truth, becomes deeply infatuated with her beauty. However, at this time, Manon is already in love with her teacher, Béliard (played by Hippolyte Girardot). Manon gradually learns the truth about her father's death, and in her anger, she buries her hatred inside, hoping for the day of vengeance to come. Under Manon's design, she reveals the hypocritical masks of Papit and Grégoire in front of all the villagers, causing Grégoire to die of shame. However, the tragedy does not end there.
