The story begins with a 90-year-old man's recollection of his life during the Great Depression. 23-year-old Jacob (played by Robert Pattinson) is orphaned and unable to pay for his tuition, forcing him to drop out of a prestigious school. By chance, he takes on a job caring for animals and doing odd jobs at a second-rate circus. The circus's main attraction is an elephant named Rosie, a highly intelligent animal. Unfortunately, the cruel circus director August (played by Christoph Waltz) shows no concern for the animals. In contrast, his wife Marlena (played by Reese Witherspoon) displays a nurturing love for the circus animals. As time goes on, Jacob gradually falls in love with the beautiful woman. Just as they decide to elope, August discovers their plan, but it is Rosie's astonishing act that brings their love to fruition. Rosie's action also becomes a secret Jacob has kept for seventy years. What is this secret?
