Beverly (played by Drew Barrymore) is a young girl with dreams of being a writer. Her father is a police officer, while her boyfriend Ray is a drug addict. When her boyfriend learns that Beverly is pregnant with his child, he resolutely decides to marry her. However, marriage does not change Ray; he is unambitious, neglects his family, and even spends the money meant for their son’s medical treatment on drugs. Beverly can no longer tolerate this man continuing to ruin her and her son’s lives, so she breaks up with him. But her young son cannot understand his mother’s actions, creating an increasing gulf between them.
However, the chaos of life does not crush Beverly. Even after her close friend Fay leaves her, she persists in holding on to her original dreams. Meanwhile, the relationship with her son's father is slowly improving…
