Homer Wells (played by Tobey Maguire) grows up in an orphanage in St. Clouds, where the head of the orphanage, Dr. Wilbur Larch (played by Michael Caine), takes great care of him. Homer grows up healthy and happy alongside other orphans and learns from Dr. Larch, mastering excellent medical skills, particularly in obstetrics. One day, Lieutenant Wally Worthington (played by Paul Rudd) arrives at the orphanage with his fiancée Candy Kendall (played by Charlize Theron) for an abortion procedure. After the surgery, Homer asks Wally if he can take him to see the outside world, and Wally gladly agrees. Homer leaves the orphanage with Wally, sees the ocean for the first time in his life, and finds a job at Wally's family apple orchard. Soon after, Wally goes to Myanmar to fight in the war. Homer and Candy develop a romance during their daily interactions. Meanwhile, Homer receives a letter from the orphanage, where Dr. Larch wishes for him to return as his assistant, but Homer declines, wanting to stay in the outside world instead. At this point, news comes from the front that Wally has been injured and is paralyzed from the waist down, and is returning home. How will Homer handle these issues? The film is adapted from John Irving's novel of the same name, receiving seven Oscar nominations and winning Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.
