Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) and her son Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher) live a life of dependence on each other. Under immense pressure, Maggie has to work overtime at the hospital to make ends meet, leaving her unable to care for her young son Oliver. So, Maggie entrusts Oliver to their neighbor Vincent (Bill Murray) — a seemingly charming and sophisticated elderly man. However, the real Vincent is irritable, a heavy drinker, addicted to gambling, and even takes Oliver to strip clubs with the dancer Daka (Naomi Watts). Oliver witnesses Vincent's various "misdeeds" but interprets them with a childlike kindness. Over time, a strong friendship develops between Vincent and the little boy.
