Beverly and Violet (Meryl Streep) are an elderly couple who now maintain their marriage through alcohol and drugs. One morning, Beverly leaves the house and never returns. Violet can only call their three daughters, along with her cousin and cousin's husband, to their home. The second daughter Ivy arrives first, followed by the eldest daughter Barbara (Julia Roberts) and her husband Bill (Ewan McGregor), who come from afar with their 14-year-old daughter. Tragic news soon follows as the police find Beverly’s body in the lake, ruling the death a suicide. The youngest daughter Karen arrives at the funeral with her fiancé. At the post-funeral dinner, a drugged-up Violet begins to lose her temper, while the daughters, each with their own worries, feel uncomfortable. Barbara can no longer stand her mother's harshness, leading to a loud argument that gradually reveals the family’s hidden tensions and truths... This play is adapted into a film script from the original play by Tracy Letts.
