In the Victorian English town of Lyme, a young gentleman named Charles (played by Jeremy Irons) encounters a mysterious woman in black (played by Meryl Streep) on the cliffs by the sea. Locals say the woman, named Sarah, has been scorned for having an affair with a French lieutenant, earning her the title "The French Lieutenant's Woman." Despite being engaged to a virtuous fiancée and having a wedding date set, Charles is intrigued by the independent woman Sarah. After several tentative meetings, they begin an illicit affair. Sarah confides her past experiences to Charles, but their secret relationship is threatened when others start to watch them… Coincidentally, this story has been adapted into a film of the same name, where the actress playing Sarah, Anna, and the actor playing Charles, Mike, also maintain a similar distant romantic relationship, but the ending is unexpectedly different…
